Waiheke Island

During World War Two gun emplacements and a tunnel network were constructed on the Island overlooking Waitemata Harbour to protect Auckland from a perceived threat from Japanese ships.

The remnants can be visited by taking a stroll in the Stony Batter Hiastoric Reserve with stunning views of the Island and across the water to the mainland.

Just a 12 minute helicopter ride or 40 minute ferry trip from Auckland , it’s great for a day trip , or even a few days !

The Island offers something for everyone including fishing , sailing , mountain biking , hiking , wine tours/tasting , and an art district with galleries and sculptures including the work of local artists.

So close to the big city yet with a true Island feel , it’s a great getaway with white sandy beaches and meandering streams.

This is one of Auckland’s true gems.
