New Zealand’s first city has roots from Scotland and wears its heritage with pride.

It is affectionately known as the Edinburgh of New Zealand.

Early settlement by the local Maori people has helped carve the interesting culture in this city.

The population and popularity exploded during the “gold rush” of the 1860’s.

During this time it had the largest urban population in New Zealand but has since been surpassed by a handful of cities.

It is home to New Zealand’s only castle.

Larnach Castle was built in 1871 of Victorian architecture and beautifully restored to depict times of past.

It is also home to some unique and rare wildlife such as the Yellow-eyed Penguin who call this home year round , and the rare Little Blue Penguin who are also locals and can be seen going about their days work of fishing for food for their young.

This is a vibrant city with interesting arts , beautiful beaches , wonderful foods , and nightlife all nestled between dramatic hillsides and  the scenic harbour.

It is the perfect place to stroll around and enjoy the beautiful gardens , architecture , and local cuisine.

A true college town with a population that varies greatly depending on the University schedule making summer (university break) a great time to visit.
